Officers shelter homeless man from cold, get happy tune in return

Police officers opened their doors to a homeless man who was found sleeping in the bitter cold at a bus stop.

Pawtucket police said in a Facebook post that their officers came across Mark a little after midnight Sunday at one of their RIPTA bus stops. It was 12 degrees outside, and officers convinced Mark to come out of the cold and spend the night at the station.

Mark had a saxophone with his belongings and told police he got involved with music when he was a child. He told them he had played in numerous bands over the years, but has fallen on hard times.

Police asked Mark if he could play something for them on his saxophone. Mark played “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” and his performance just warms your heart.

Mark told police he occasionally plays in public and hopes for the best in the way of donations. His dream is to get work playing with a band again.

“Mark, we’re hoping you find the sunny side of the street,” Pawtucket police wrote on Facebook.
