A former beauty queen has become Gibraltar’s youngest-ever mayor, and immediately declared the territory “will always be British”.
Kaiane Lopez, 30, is a former Miss World and was declared mayor of the territory on Tuesday.
She told The Mail: “I am proud to be British.
“Gibraltar is British and always will be. Why would we ever want to change our flag?”
Ms Lopez is the youngest mayor in the territory’s history, and the third woman to take on the role.
She was also Gibraltar’s first ever Miss World when she was crowned in 2009.
Local media has described Ms Lopez as “the most beautiful mayor in the world”.
At her swearing-in ceremony, the young mayor spoke of how grateful she was.
“Having served as deputy mayor for the last few years I have witnessed the hard work and dedication required to fulfil this role. I would therefore like to thank our former mayors for all they have contributed to the significance to the mayoralty,” she said.
“They are all truly an inspiration.”
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said: “You were Miss Gibraltar, you were Miss World and now you are Mrs Mayor.
“When Kaiane Aldorino became Miss World she was someone who carried the dreams of Gibraltarians around the world. She became a free woman of Gibraltar and she has Gibraltar’s medallion of honour, our highest civic distinction. Therefore asking her to become mayor was something that the house was able to do unanimously,” he said.
