Cheese, cheese, cheese. Whether you’re a fan of cheddar, brie, Parmesan, Wensleydale, or mozzarella, there’s no denying that there’s a cheese for every taste.
The best thing about cheese is it’s incredible rejuvenating capabilities; burn your toast? Whack some cheese on there. Disappointing bolognese? Grate a bit of cheese over it! Burned your pizza? Chuck some extra cheese on there and you’ll be fine! There is no dinner that can’t be saved from disaster with some of this dairylicious good stuff.
Unfortunately, considering that cheese is basically just one block of fat, it isn’t exactly thought of as one of the very best things for you to gorge yourself on. (We’re not saying that ever stops us, but y’know…)
However, all that could be about to change as it’s been discovered that certain types of cheese are actually super beneficial to your liver. Researchers from the Texas A&M University have suggested that aged cheeses including brie, mozzarella, gouda, parmesan, and cheddar are good for the health of your liver and thus, they’re key to long life.
The science is that apparently aged cheeses naturally contain a compound called spermidine which is “able to prevent liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of liver cancer, developing by stopping damaged cells replicating”.
However, there is a catch (isn’t there always?) According to the scientists, you’d have to have been eating a lot of cheese from a young age to be able to get the benefits. On the plus side, we were stuffing our faces with Babybel and Cheese Strings when we were still little ‘uns so we reckon we’ve achieved that!
Of course, you shouldn’t forget that cheese also contains tonnes of sodium (responsible for high blood pressure) and saturated fat so you should probably avoid converting to an all-cheese diet straight away. However, if you enjoy some cheese as part of a healthy balanced diet then you should be alright!
However, if you don’t like cheese or you’re a vegan or whatever don’t panic, you can get spermidine from mushrooms, corn, soya, legumes, and wholegrains!
