A marvelous initiative to offer free week long family holidays in Cornwall to firefighters and Grenfell residents has already gathered pledges from 60 individual property owners – less than 24 hours after being launched.
And now a West Cornwall Holiday lodge company has offered 50 lodges for a week for the firefighters and their families.
The number is growing by the hour as the Duchy responds in a most wonderful way.
The Facebook page Cornwall Hugs Grenfell was only launched yesterday “Imagine if we could put a Cornish holiday on the horizon of every Grenfell resident and firefighter family” posted the page.
Redruth Rotary have also been heavily involved in generating the spontaneous outpouring of goodwill from Cornish property owners.
The initiative as a whole has received such overwhelming support it has now being joined by Visit Cornwall (the tourist board) who say they are best placed to liaise with the numerous agencies and organisations involved in support following the awful fire.
“It’s gone a bit busy yes!” the Head of Visit Cornwall, Malcolm Bell told Cornish Stuff.
“Cornwall is famous for it’s holidays. There are many people in London who are doing alot for this but this is the most appropriate thing that Cornwall could offer”
There are nearly 30,000 holiday homes in Cornwall and tourism is a vibrant part of our economy.
“There were 120 households in Grenfell Tower and 200+ firefighters. My dream is that we could offer a holiday to all who wish it. Some may have a holiday home to offer, some may have £, some may have ‘connections’ or simply words of support” suggested Esme Page, who launched Cornwall Hugs Grenfell on social media on Tuesday.
It was set up to enable people to:
- Donate a week in a holiday home to the family of a firefighter who served at Grenfell Tower or
- Donate a week in a holiday home to a Grenfell Tower resident family or
- Donate £ to help with transport
Mr Bell from Visit Cornwall will be busy in the days to come gathering the offers already flooding his inbox.
“A holiday is something a person could look forward to on their recovery” he told CS.
He went on to thank all the property owners for the pledges so far and advised those thinking of getting involved : “People will not necessarily be in a position to think about a holiday straight away, so it’d be nice to have a range of offers, not just immediate ones, which people might not be in the mood to take quite yet. You can make an offer for weeks into the autumn, quieter periods, next year if you want, whenever”
Property owners can now send offers straight to firstname.lastname@example.org or via CHG.
This morning the Cornwall Hugs Grenfell page posted:
“Holiday week pledges rolling in thick and fast, so I think Cornwall definitely has a heart for this idea. Thank you! Blown away by Cornwall’s generous heart responding to this”
